Rovers look to bring in further top-flight experience

FORMER Tottenham Hotspur and Inter Milan midfielder Stephane Dalmat has been offered a move to Doncaster Rovers.

Dalmat, 32, is leaving French club Rennes on a free transfer and a stay at the Keepmoat Stadium would help revive his career in English football.

Rovers manager Dean Saunders has already signed a number of a former Premier League players as part of a link-up with agent Willie McKay.

In all cases, the players agreed to take massive pay cuts and view their time with Rovers as a ‘shop window’ to bring about a bigger deal.

Sheffield United have agreed to sign defender Marcus Williams on a free transfer from Reading.

The former Scunthorpe United left-back has recently completed a loan period at Bramall Lane and is now finalising personal terms.

The Blades will also be keeping striker James Beattie for the rest of the season – despite the former England international being unable to play for the club yet due to injury.

Beattie, who was released by Scottish club Rangers last summer, has been training with the Blades for several weeks and initially signed a deal until next month.

Sheffield Wednesday manager Gary Megson insists that goalkeeping coach Andy Rhodes is unable to help the Owls contain his son Jordan this weekend.

The Rhodes family will be at loggerheads for 90 minutes tomorrow afternoon when Jordan arrives at Hillsborough with League One rivals Huddersfield Town.

The striker has scored 15 goals for the Terriers this season and his form has led to a first international cap for Scotland.

Megson, however, says it would be unprofessional to ask his father for tips in keeping the 21-year-old quiet.

“It won’t be a case of asking Andy what’s happening at Huddersfield or how to handle his son,” said Megson.

“There will be none of that and it won’t happen the other way because they are too professional.

“I know the two of them and Jordan is a good player. A lot of people try to handle him but can’t do. We come across good players a lot and we do OK against them.”

Former Barnsley manager Mark Robins is among the contenders for the manager’s role at Preston North End.

Robins is still seeking a return to management – seven months after leaving Oakwell.

His main rivals for the post are Billy Davies, who previously managed Preston five years ago, and Dave Jones, who worked under Preston chairman Peter Ridsdale at Cardiff City.
