Doncaster Rovers striker Federico Macheda has been forced to return to Manchester United after his one-month loan deal was cut short by injury.

The 22-year-old striker, whose three goals have helped Rovers pick up seven points from 12 since he was introduced into the starting line-up, picked up a hamstring injury in Saturday’s 1-0 win over Leicester City.

Sidelined for several weeks, Macheda has now returned to Old Trafford, but Rovers manager Paul Dickov said he wants to bring the Italian back to South Yorkshire once he regains full fitness.

“He came off with a tight hamstring and will be missing for a good few weeks but we are still looking at extending his deal as we hope to have him back soon,” said Dickov, whose Rovers team have no game this weekend due to the international break.

“We are speaking to Manchester United to do a deal to get him back once he.

“This international break lets us get on top of the knocks and bumps players get on a weekly basis without chance to get them back fully fit.

“We have had Reece (Wabara) and Richie (Wellens) both struggling last week so this break gives a chance to get a clean bill of health for the majority of the players.

“The problem injury was James (Husband) who is our only recognised left-back, who will now have an operation on Friday for a dislocated shoulder that has resulted in a torn cartilage.

“We will now look at whether we need to bring someone in on loan for cover but Reece (Wabara) came in Saturday and probably had his best game for us, covered the left back position well.

“When we first signed Reece, I knew he could play in the left side position from when I had him at Oldham and also from watching him play. The more players like this, who can cover other positions when need its better for us.”
