Swansea City 4 Sheffield United 0: Adams ready to meet Blades board as term ends with heavy defeat

Sheffield United manager Micky Adams says his future as manager should be decided later this week.

The Blades, relegated last weekend following the 2-2 draw with Barnsley, ended the season with a whimper at Swansea as the play-off hopefuls confirmed the gap in class between the two sides.

Swans started the day in fourth but this comprehensive 4-0 victory over the Blades, coupled with Cardiff’s 1-1 draw at Burnley, saw them leapfrog their south Wales rivals and finish just outside the automatic promotion places.

Adams, only appointed in late December, ended the season second-from-bottom and wondering what his future now holds.

“I have a meeting with the club’s owners during the week but I can’t prejudge it,” he said.

“I don’t know what will happen but I want to carry on. Absolutely. But (chairman) Mr (Kevin) McCabe will set the agenda.

“We had a lot of players from the youth team in the side today and I’m not sure if that is the right thing to do at this moment in time. There are four good teams in the play-offs and Swansea are certainly one of them.”

Third place is a remarkable achievement for Rodgers in his first season at the Liberty Stadium, representing an improvement on last season when the club were agonisingly pushed out of the play-off picture by a late surge from Blackpool.

It will be the first time City have competed in the play-offs since winning promotion to the second tier in 2008, but opponents Nottingham Forest were semi-finalists last season having finished third themselves, crashing out to Blackpool who famously went on to clinch Wembley glory.

Rodgers said: “It is a wonderful achievement for the club to finish third.

“We have ended the season how we started at home with a 4-0 win and a fantastic performance. I want to pay tribute to the players because they are the most important people at the club.

“With all due respect, it was difficult situation for Sheffield United because they came here with 4-5-1 and they were trying to contain a team who are sometimes unplayable at home. But some of their young players played well.”

Stephen Dobbie opened the scoring on the half-hour with a free-kick whipped in at pace from an acute angle which evaded everyone.

Blades defender Shane Lowry then saw red for handling Scott Sinclair’s goalbound effort on the line, with the England U-21 winger stepping up to score his 24th goal of the season from the spot.

Dobbie then grabbed his second of the afternoon and Leon Britton rounded matters off late on against his former club.
