Vaz Te will hope to face Forest for Tykes after trial

FORMER Bolton Wanderers striker Ricardo Vaz Te has secured a move to Barnsley.

Vaz Te, 24, who was released by Scottish club Hibernian at the end of last season, had been on trial with the Tykes for the last fortnight and clearly impressed new manager Keith Hill.

He will now be available for Saturday’s opening game of the season at Nottingham Forest.

Northern Ireland international Dean Shiels will spend the next six months playing for Kilmarnock on loan under his father Kenny. Shiels has opted for a return to the Scottish Premier League just two-and-a-half years after quitting Hibernian to join Doncaster.

The former Arsenal striker, 26, is unlikely to return to the Keepmoat Stadium – where his contract expires at the end of the season – but admits that he has enjoyed his time in South Yorkshire.

“I enjoyed my time at Doncaster and I’m still a Doncaster player but now I want to help Kilmarnock as much as I can,” he said.

“It’s all been so rushed that I’ve barely had any sleep over the last couple of days. I had a lot of reasons to come back. My wife’s from Scotland so that was also a big pull.”

Shiels insists there will be no favours from his father who managed several clubs in Northern Ireland before landing the Kilmarnock job this summer.

“Anyone who knows my father will know he will not treat me any different to anyone else and I wouldn’t want it any other way,” he said.

“Once you’re out there playing, he’s not my Dad, he’s my boss and I’m out to do a job for him, the team, and the fans.”

Shiels is set to make his first start for Kilmarnock this weekend against his former club Hibernian.

He could line up alongside former Rovers team-mate Paul Heffernan who joined Kilmarnock from Sheffield Wednesday earlier this summer.

Rovers manager Sean O’Driscoll, meanwhile, is hoping to complete the signing of Algerian centre-back Rachid Bouhenna before Saturday’s opening game of the season at Brighton & Hove Albion.

Bouhenna, 20, has been on trial for the last few weeks and, although struggling with the English language, has looked comfortable in pre-season friendlies.

“He has done enough to earn a contract,” said O’Driscoll. “His attitude has been first class, he has looked assured in games, and he has some really good attributes.

“If he was an English player, I think he would have been sought after by a number of clubs. He doesn’t need to be fluent (in English) but needs a little understanding of football phrases more than anything else.

“We have talked to Doncaster College and there are people there who are prepared to help.”
