Strachan, son of ex Leeds United captain Gordon, will be alongside the 43-year-old in his first match in charge of Rovers at Shrewsbury Town tomorrow with the pair taking on a watching brief at the weekend.

Both Ferguson and Strachan have plenty of work to do with Rovers one place off the bottom of League One and boasting just one league away goal to their name this season and without a win on the road since April 14.

“His sessions are good and he’s got good imagination and knows exactly how I want to play and how I want to train.

“For me, that makes it easier in terms of timescale in telling people how I want to do it. But to be fair, all the staff have been really good. It’s been really enjoyable, I got back on the training ground and loved it. It had been a while.

“Gavin is a good coach and I know I can trust him, which is important as well.”
