Three Yorkshire clubs in the Championship got off to a strong start with 1-0 wins, but it was a harsh baptism to life in the Football League for York City.

Much-fancied Middlesbrough were downed by Keith Hill’s Barnsley as Craig Davies scores the only goal.

David Cotterill scored a cheeky lob from just inside the opposition half as Rovers made the perfect start.

Gillingham 3-1 Bradford City
