End of season report

Yorkshire football supporters give their verdict on how the campaign was for them

HULL CITY

19th Premier league

Gareth Richardson, Beverley

What is your assessment of the club's season: success or failure?

A failure, on and off the field. Getting relegated was bad enough but the state of the finances is worrying. I can't believe City have been allowed to get in this sort of mess. The previous chairman Paul Duffen and the owner Russell Bartlett have a lot to answer for.

Player of the year:

Stephen Hunt did well.

Most disappointing player at the club this season:

Jimmy Bullard was a disgrace when he came back from injury the second time.

Best moment:

Beating Manchester City just a day after my son Charlie was born. Something I will never forget.

Worst moment:

Losing to Burnley at home effectively relegated us.

Best side faced:

Tottenham Hotspur were brilliant at the KC.

Worst side faced:

Wigan Athletic.

Best opposition fans:

The Portsmouth supporters stuck with their team during what was a shocking season for them.

Worst opposition fans: Manchester United. I don't understand why they sing so much anti-England stuff.

What areas need strengthening in the summer?

It is more a case of making sure that we hang on to the young lads in the squad rather than worrying about who we should sign.

Are you happy with the way the club is being run off the field?

I am now that Adam Pearson is back.

Advice to the manager:

Go with youth next season. We need hungry lads like Tom Cairney, Liam Cooper, Mark Cullen and Will Atkinson.

BARNSLEY

18th championship

Emma Labedzki, Barnsley

What is your assessment of the club's season: success or failure? After a dour start under Simon Davey, performances improved following the appointment of Mark Robins before our good form petered out and we ended 18th, just a couple of places below my original prediction of 16th – I know my team too well.

Player of the year:

Hugo Colace – not in the same mould as Neil Redfearn but weighed in with some vital goals.

Most disappointing player at the club this season:

Anderson de Silva. Failed to live up to the hype and fulfil his potential.

Best moment:

Securing safety with a few games to spare – as perennial favourites for the drop it's not easy looking over your shoulder every season.

Worst moment:

Losing 6-1 to Newcastle United – our goalkeeper Luke Steele was sent off just before half-time.

Best side faced:

Newcastle United.

Worst side faced:

Plymouth for conspiring to get our game abandoned during a downpour with us 4-1 ahead.

Best opposition fans:

Newcastle United.

Worst opposition fans:

Sheffield United.

What areas need strengthening in the summer?

The acquisition of a proven goalscorer. We have not had a striker score 20-plus goals a season since Neil Shipperley.

Are you happy with the way the club is being run off-the-field?

Yes. Our board is not happy simply avoiding relegation and brought in a good new manager who they support.

Advice to the manager:

Carry on good work and bring in the right passionate faces.

DONCASTER ROVERS

12th championship

Gareth Thomas, Doncaster

What is your assessment of the club's season: success or failure?

Overall it has been a very successful season. First it was survival, then mid-table optimism, then (briefly) we were all thinking of the play-offs.

Player of the year:

Billy Sharp – a miraculous signing.

Most disappointing player at the club this season:

Steve Brooker – was ruled out for the season and we would like to see what he can do.

Best moment: Probably the 'Brazil' moment we had against QPR when they just couldn't get the ball, and when finding out that Sean O'Driscoll was not going to leave us for Burnley.

Worst moment: Losing at home to Barnsley after we had battered 'em for 90 per cent of the match.

Best side faced: Apart from the Cup games (Tottenham), I thought the way Newcastle rode their luck at the Keepmoat and then grabbed a winner was a good indicator of how good a side they were.

Worst side faced: Probably Peterborough – so it proved at the end of the season.

Best opposition fans: Newcastle.

Worst opposition fans: Scunthorpe United.

What areas need strengthening in the summer?

I think every Rovers fan will say 'sign Billy Sharp'.

Are you happy with the way the club is being run off-the-field?

We really need to up our game with the 'customer experience'. That said, we have John Ryan as a great figurehead.

Advice to the manager:

I don't think anything I say will be news or worthy of note to Sean – he really is a manager-and-a-half.

SHEFFIELD UNITED

8th championship

Jim Blackburn, Millhouses

What is your assessment of the club's season: success or failure?

Difficult to say. I thought we would make the play-offs but we fell short. Was the manager to blame or was he just dealt a bad hand? The jury is out .

Player of the year:

Chris Morgan became a better player after the 'Iain Hume incident' and was the one constant in an ever-changing rearguard.

Most disappointing player at the club this season:

Ched Evans showed glimpses of talent but generally looked half-hearted and uninterested.

Best moment:

Darren Ambrose's goal for Palace on the final day at Hillsborough. Also Nick Montgomery's wonder-strike against Blackpool.

Worst moment:

No defining moment just a creeping realisation that we were very, very average.

Best side faced:

Swansea City.

Worst side faced:

Blackpool looked like relegation fodder – now look where they are.

Best opposition fans:

Newcastle United.

Worst opposition fans:

Watford.

What areas need strengthening in the summer?

Defence and midfield. We need a commanding young centre-half to play with Morgan.

Are you happy with the way the club is being run off the field?

No. It seems an unhappy ship lacking clear direction.

Advice to the manager:

Can we please play football. Long-time fans are becoming alienated and loyalty is being tested. A diet of grim, functional, percentage football is not what fans hanker after. If we are struggling come Christmas, there can be only one outcome.

SHEFFIELD WEDNESDAY

22nd championship

Peter Shaw, Filey

What is your assessment of the club's season: success or failure?

Our season was an abject failure from start to finish. Under Brian Laws, we were hopeless off the ball and our shape was a joke. This improved under Alan Irvine but to rectify the problem we played negative football and couldn't score. The club was so focused on delivering the 'imminent' investment that action required to improve things during the transfer window never materialised.

Player of the year:

Lee Grant. Consistent, saved us on numerous occasions, and inevitably always involved.

Most disappointing player at the club this season:

This title could be bestowed on many but Darren Potter is singled out as he is supposed to be our playmaker but was inconsistent.

Best moment: Beating Scunthorpe 4-0 at home – it could easily have been 8-0.

Worst moment:

The final whistle against Palace on the last day.

Best side faced:

Doncaster followed closely by West Brom.

Worst side faced:

Scunthorpe United.

Best opposition fans:

Newcastle United.

Worst opposition fans:

Plymouth Argyle.

What areas need strengthening in the summer?

Basically, all areas.

Are you happy with the way the club is being run off the field?

No, the chairman has resigned, we urgently need a cash injection plus new blood, energy and enthusiasm in the boardroom.

Advice to the manager:

Concentrate on bringing in players who can get us out of League One. Let's take one step at a time.

HUDDERSFIELD TOWN

6th league one

Andrew Pearce, Huddersfield

What is your assessment of the club's season: success or failure?

Limited success. With the money that Town have spent, getting into the play-offs was the minimum I expected. We did that but, unfortunately, could not get past Millwall. It was a real shame as some of the football we have played this season has been superb.

Player of the year:

Peter Clarke, just pipping Lee Peltier and Lee Novak.

Most disappointing player at the club this season:

Antony Kay. Big wages, regular selection but too many mediocre performances.

Best moment:

There were a few, but probably Jordan Rhodes scoring the fastest headed hat-trick in League history.

Worst moment:

Hide Ad
Hide Ad

Anthony Pilkington's shot hitting the crossbar and bouncing down to hit the Leeds goalkeeper on the head before rolling to safety. Had it gone in, we would have won at Elland Road.

Best side faced:

Millwall.

Worst side faced:

Wycombe Wanderers.

Best opposition fans:

Norwich City's made a lot of noise.

Worst opposition fans:

Millwall. I don't know how they get away with such revolting behaviour year after year.

What areas need strengthening in the summer?

Left-back and central midfield.

Are you happy with the way the club is being run off the field?

I am delighted. (Chairman) Dean Hoyle is doing a wonderful job.

Advice to the manager:

Hide Ad

Get a left-back in who is as good as Lee Peltier is on the right flank and find a Barry Horne-type character in midfield.

LEEDS UNITED

2nd league one

Paul Taylor, Doncaster

What is your assessment of the club's season: success or failure?

Success...at last. Promotion, albeit with a few jitters since Christmas, and a win at Old Trafford. What more could we ask for?

Player of the year:

Jermaine Beckford. For once, let's just look at what he does best – scoring goals, including the winners against Manchester United and Bristol Rovers.

Most disappointing player at the club this season:

Gary McSheffrey. I expected more from him.

Best moment:

Hide Ad
Hide Ad

The final whistle at the Bristol Rovers game, although the last-minute penalty at White Hart Lane when we drew 2-2 with Spurs was a belter.

Worst moment:

Swindon's third goal in the 3-0 defeat at Elland Road, capping an awful afternoon.

Best side faced:

Millwall. Not pretty but very efficient.

Worst side faced:

Tranmere Rovers at home, as John Barnes's tenure unravelled.

Best opposition fans:

Millwall at The Den. A cacophony of sound and intimidation.

Hide Ad
Hide Ad

Worst opposition fans: Manchester United. The antithesis of Millwall.

What areas need strengthening in the summer?

Strengthen the spine. We need a centre back, a Strachan-like midfielder and a replacement for Beckford. Oh, and two full-backs.

Are you happy with the way the club is being run off the field?

Undecided. We run a tight ship these days but there still remains a series of unanswered questions regarding ownership and where the money goes.

Advice to the manager:

Purchase wisely this summer. For the first time in several years, the club is going in the right direction.

BRADFORD CITY

14th league two

Mike Harrison, editor of City Gent fanzine

What is your assessment of the club's season: success or failure?

A failure, but with mitigating circumstances in that Stuart McCall's budget had been slashed so much that success was always going to be hard to find. I was very sad to see Stuart go but he left with dignity intact.

Player of the year:

James Hanson, for stepping up from non-League in such an impressive fashion.

Most disappointing player at the club this season:

Chris Brandon. We spent all of the previous season waiting for him to get fit but then he turned out to be a let-down.

Best moment:

Scoring at Cheltenham. We had played four games and not scored in any of them so the pressure was really on. We won the game 5-4.

Worst moment:

Stuart McCall standing down.

Best side faced:

Rochdale were very impressive.

Worst side faced:

Grimsby Town. We won 3-0 there in November and I knew then we would struggle.

Best opposition fans: Northampton showed great respect the day we remembered those who died in the fire.

Worst opposition fans:

There weren't any.

Are you happy with the way the club is being run off the field?

No. The club made a lot of contentious decisions this season that I simply didn't agree with, such as stopping the radio commentaries for home games.

Advice to the manager:

Win some games or one of our two chairmen will, no doubt, be itching to make a change sooner or later.

ROTHERHAM UNITED

5th league two

Alan Wheldon, Dinnington

What is your assessment of the club's season: success or failure?

Success – but we have been too inconsistent, throwing away points which could have got us automatic promotion. The enforced winter break did not help the players form and fitness

Player of the year:

Adam Le Fondre – scored 30 goals.

Most disappointing player at the club this season:

Jason Taylor – expected more from him but now moved on.

Best moment:

Beating Aldershot to get to Wembley – and hopefully one more to come.

Worst moment:

The performance away at Darlington

Best side faced:

Rochdale

Worst side faced:

Grimsby Town

Best opposition fans:

Aldershot in play-offs

Worst opposition fans:

Notts County.

What areas need strengthening in the summer?

Up front, midfield and

centre-half if we get promoted.

Are you happy with the way the club is being run off the field?

Yes. The club shops at both Mangham House and Don Valley are now better stocked and things are looking good with the new ground and training ground.

Advice to the manager:

We need more pace in the team next season.
