England boss Roy Hodgson content to let striker Jamie Vardy get married

MANAGER Roy Hodgson has explained his decision to allow Jamie Vardy to miss England's friendly with Australia on Friday night, having given the striker dispensation to get married after he cancelled his wedding 12 months ago.

The Yorkshire-born forward, who netted the winner in yesterday’s friendly win over Turkey, will wed his fiancée Becky on Wednesday.

England manager Hodgson revealed that he acceded to Vardy’s request after bearing in mind that the Leicester forward put back his wedding last summer after being called up by his country.

On Vardy, who will link up with England after Friday’s game at the Stadium of Light, Hodgson explained: “You could say that is unfortunate, but you must bear in mind that his wedding was planned last June and I called him up for the international matches and he cancelled his wedding.

“He deserves the possibility of getting married here.

“To be honest, we know Jamie and have been satisfied with him and I don’t think his place in the team or squad at the moment is under enormous threat and we do have other players we need to look at.”

Professing mixed feelings on his side’s display against Turkey, Hodgson added: “Wins are always pleasing and there are some positive aspects.

“For large swathes of the game, I thought we played reasonably well.

“When you play a team of Turkey’s quality – that had some good moments and played quite well – it shows these next three weeks are going to be vital to make certain we stay compact at all times and make life easier for ourselves defensively.”
