England call-up shows people how good I am – Butterfield

BARNSLEY captain Jacob Butterfield hopes his first call-up to the England under-21 squad will raise a few eyebrows in the football world.

Butterfield, 21, was one of five new faces in the squad chosen by Stuart Pearce this week for European Championship qualifiers against Iceland and Belgium. The Bradford-born midfielder is also being tracked by a number of Premier League clubs after rejecting a new deal at Oakwell.

“It was a proud day for me and my family and I was delighted to get the recognition,” he said. “It’s a massive honour to get a chance to represent my country and it’s something I have always wanted to do.

“Hopefully, it will raise a few eyebrows and make people realise how good I am,” he added, “A lot of the lads who I have worked with say I have always been good enough.”

Wolves manager Mick McCarthy and Everton’s David Moyes were both in the stands on Tuesday night as Butterfield helped Barnsley to victory over Hull City.

Manager Keith Hill says Butterfield deserves his call-up but has stressed the importance of maintaining his current progress.

“His ability has never been in question but this is a product of his hard work,” said Hill. “One swallow doesn’t make a summer, however, and it is about continual development from now on.

“He is contracted until the end of the season and we are hoping to extend that but if we can’t, we can’t,” he added.

“Let’s embrace that not put him under pressure. His performances speak volumes for his commitment to Barnsley Football Club.”

The Tykes’ trip to Brighton and Hove Albion was moved to tomorrow afternoon at the request of local police because of Bonfire Night celebrations in nearby Lewes.

Hill has the utmost respect for the Seagulls and manager Gus Poyet and says they were the best team in League One last season ‘by a country mile.’

Striker Billy Paynter will make his debut for Brighton after moving on loan this week from Leeds United.

Barnsley striker Craig Davies makes his first return to Brighton since being released by Poyet two summers ago.

The Welsh international joined the Tykes at the start of the season from Chesterfield but has only just regained full fitness after a troublesome groin injury.

He scored his first goal for the club last weekend against Bristol City and followed that up with another in midweek against Hull.

“I was losing my head a little bit but I was never in doubt that I could score goals for Barnsley in the Championship,” he said. “It took me a few games to find my feet and to get to know the players but, hopefully, those will be the first of many.”
