ESPN to take over from Sky on mobile contract

ESPN will succeed Sky as the holders of the mobile rights for all 380 Premier League games from next season.

The three-year deal will allow Disney-owned broadcaster ESPN to send video clips of goals and highlights to mobile phones and other mobile devices.

The clips can be received during the matches for those games not kicking off at 3pm on Saturdays, and for those matches the clips can be received after 4.45pm.

The mobile rights are becoming increasingly valuable with the growth of 3G networks and miniature personal computers.

Premier League chief executive Richard Scudamore said: "ESPN's purchase of Barclays Premier League mobile clip rights demonstrates their commitment to the competition and the fans.

"Mobile is an increasingly important technology as hand-held devices become ever more sophisticated, therefore a good offering with a strong partner is important to us both in terms of accessibility and complementing live coverage."

Sky currently hold the mobile rights.
