Exclusive: Rotherham United stars urged to stay

ROTHERHAM UNITED manager Ronnie Moore has challenged his out of contract stars to earn new deals in tonight's League Two play-off final second leg against Aldershot Town.

Captain Ian Sharps, defender Mark Lynch, and midfielder Pablo Mills are on a list of players who currently face uncertain futures with the Millers.

Moore admits that a positive result tonight followed by promotion at Wembley on May 30 could yet decide who stays or goes in the summer.

"Players know that futures are at stake," said Moore. "Contracts are up for grabs and decisions have still to be made. Those who are on the fringe might just turn the tide.

"We have about 12 out of contract and the play-offs are a great opportunity for all of them to impress," he added.

"If we do win promotion, those who are released have got it on their CV and are leaving a First Division team which also gives them a better chance to find work."

Veteran duo Paul Warne and Andy Liddell, striker Drewe Broughton, defenders David Haggerty, Marc Joseph, and Andy Nicholas, and midfielder Micky Cummins are also on the list of players whose contracts are about to expire.

Striker Marcus Marshall and defender Gavin Gunning are on loan from Blackburn Rovers, winger Abdulai Bell-Baggie from Reading, midfielder Josh Walker from Middlesbrough, and defender Liam Darville on loan from Leeds United.

Leading 1-0 from Saturday's first leg, the Millers are just 90 minutes away from a place in the Wembley final but Moore is taking nothing for granted.

His players trained on the Don Valley Stadium pitch yesterday and also practised spot-kicks just in case a shoot-out is required to settle the tie

"We have been training at Don Valley before home games for the last six weeks," said Moore. "This game is so close that it could come to penalties – but, hopefully not, because it would be no good for my heart!

"We practiced penalties but you still can't replicate the pressure there will be and how your heart is going to be pumping.

"We also practised the long walk from the halfway line just so the players could get a feel for it."

Aldershot will be without goalkeeper Jamie Young for the match. The 24-year-old lasted just 23 minutes of Saturday's first leg before he injured his knee so Venezuelan Mikhael Jaimez-Ruiz will start between the posts.

Otherwise, manager Kevin Dillon has no fresh injury or suspension concerns and despite being desperate for his side to overturn the deficit and secure a place in the final, Dillon insists the pressure is on Rotherham, who narrowly missed out on automatic promotion despite being in the hunt for much of the season.

"We were 25-1 outsiders for promotion when I took over and that is probably still the case," said Dillon. "It is a fantastic achievement for ourselves, Morecambe and Dagenham to make the play-offs this year after just coming out of the Conference but everyone expects Rotherham to go up."
