Extra police on duty for Sheffield Wednesday v Leeds clash

Extra police will be on duty in Sheffield on Saturday for the derby clash between Wednesday and Leeds United.

Around 24,000 fans are expected at Hillsborough for the game, which kicks off at 12.30pm.

Police chiefs said there were be ‘a significant police presence around the ground and in the city centre’.

Supporters planning to attend the fixture are reminded that it is a ticket only match.

Because there are no trams due to be running between Meadowhall and Sheffield on because of engineering works, fans are advised to allow extra time to get to Hillsborough.

Superintendent Scott Green, who is overseeing the policing of the match said: “We are planning for a safe, enjoyable event for everyone attending.

“We will provide a welcoming environment for fans who want to attend and enjoy the game and we will endeavour to keep any disruption to a minimum for people going about their daily business in the city and around the stadium.

“There will be a welcoming and reassuring police presence, however, I want to make it clear that no level of disorder will be tolerated and we have sufficient resources in place to deal with those intent on causing trouble.”
