The Middlesbrough loanee, given permission to link-up with England Under-20s a day late to feature in Sunday’s FA Cup game with Leyton Orient, was afforded a red-letter day, firing a hat-trick in a 6-0 routing.

It was the teenager’s first start since the end of August and he provided Wilder with plenty of food for thought with the Blades’ chief keen to have more selection quandaries.

He said: “Harry has had opportunities. He came on against Fleetwood, and scored against Bristol Rovers. It was a start for him and he has had to work hard for a start and that is what I want players to do – work hard to get into the team.

“It cannot just be an easy one and I did not make wholesale changes on Sunday. Harry had looked extremely sharp and was waiting for an opportunity.

“Maybe he sniffed that he might be playing and he certainly took that, as did Rammers (Aaron Ramsdale) and it was an important game for him and a good introduction towards a league debut.

“I did not think Harry played very well for 20 to 25 minutes. He was looking to get into the game, but then the game opened up.

“There was one period where he set a goal up and got at their lad in the box and from then on, he just flew. It was good for him to score as he’s an undoubted talent.

“We have to add the other bits to his game to make him a better player and fit in with what we are about, but he has got something.”

The Blades’ reward for victory is a second-round trip to face another fellow League One club in Bolton Wanderers, managed by former Bradford City manager Phil Parkinson.
