Fantasy Premier League: Gameweek 22 Preview – Which Leeds United player is a must-own

The Premier League’s busy schedule promoted rotation last week as popular picks Sterling, Stones and Cancelo were all benched in a gameweek which highlighted the importance of a strong bench.

After another quick turnaround, the football returns tonight as Sheffield United take on West Brom in a bottom of the table clash in the gameweek’s early kick-off. The transfer deadline is tonight at 4.30pm.

Mo Salah (£12.6m) vs Brighton (H)

After rediscovering his form against West Ham via two goals and a 15-point display, Salah goes into the Brighton game as Liverpool’s main hope as Sadio Mane’s participation is in doubt after picking up an injury.

No player in the league took more shots or had more shots on target than Salah last weekend which bodes well against Brighton who have conceded 28 shots in the box over the last four gameweeks.

Raheem Sterling (£11.5m) vs Burnley (A)

Having being benched for Man City’s game against Sheffield United on Saturday, we roll over our Sterling pick to this week’s game instead. Raheem has nine attacking returns in his last nine starts and has played across all areas of the City attack in recent games.

The last time he played, no Man City player took more shots or had more chances from open play than Sterling, so assuming he starts, he should do well.

Bruno Fernandes (£11.4) vs Southampton (H)

Even though he’s only generated one assist in the last four gameweeks, Fernandes continues to create. In this timeframe no player has taken more shots than the Portuguese midfielder and only one player has had more shots on target.

No player has created more ‘big chances’ during this spell either so although his points haven’t reflected his efforts, the stats still indicate that Fernandes should do well.

The Form Guide - Who’s Hot?

Callum Wilson (Newcastle, £6.7m)

Over the last two gameweeks only Ollie Watkins has taken more shots in the box than Wilson and he was duly rewarded with two goals ad 13 points in Newcastle’s surprising victory at Everton.

Against Crystal Palace and Southampton next, you can expect Wilson to do well against these teams.

That said, Newcastle have taken the second fewest shots on target in the league over the last four gameweeks so like most things in this game – nothing is guaranteed.

Jack Grealish (Aston Villa, £7.8m)

Although he has six goals and eleven assists already this season, including a goal and assist across his last two, I can’t help but think that Grealish is still underachieving in terms of FPL.

Across the season, no player has created more chances than the Villa captain but he’s being let down by his teammates and as a result doesn’t top the chart for assists. If his teammates could finish these chances off, Jack would be even more hyped than he already is.

Stuart Dallas (Leeds, £4.8m)

Benefitting from being promoted to midfield when Leeds have a fully fit defence, this change in Dallas’ positioning enables him to get forward more and search for goals, evidenced by his goal in Leeds’ 3-1 away win at Leicester on Sunday.

With three losses in their previous four before this result, the Leicester win may be a catalyst for change as the Whites next games are at home against Everton and Crystal Palace.

The Form Guide - Who’s Not?

Reece James (Chelsea, £5.1m)

Nobody bar Mendy, Azpilicueta, Silva and Rudiger look safe in Tuchel’s new-look Chelsea side but with Callum Hudson-Odoi starting both games at right wing-back to start the German’s tenure, it looks like James will have strong competition for the remainder of the season.

Reece James hasn’t made consecutive starts since December so shouldn’t be on anyone’s Fantasy radar at the moment.

Heung-Min Son (Tottenham, £9.7m)

Without a goal in four weeks, Son is currently the games’ most transferred out midfielder as over 220,000 have axed him from their teams this week.

Up against Chelsea and without Kane alongside him, Son’s recent output is down as over his last four games he’s only had four shots on target.

Che Adams (Southampton, £5.9m)

Having completed 90 minutes just once over Southampton’s last five games, Adams’ fierce competition for gametime from the likes of Armstrong, Djenepo, Redmond and now Minamino are limiting his chances.

Without a goal or an assist in eight gameweeks, if you haven’t sold Adams now, you probably should before this week’s away trip to Man United.

Ones to Watch (Less than 5% ownership)

Ainsley Maitland-Niles (West Brom, £4.6m, 0.7%)

Rumour has is that AMN chose to join West Brom over Southampton and Leicester as he is more likely to play in midfield for the Baggies rather than at full-back like he often did at Arsenal.

If this is the case then we have a cheap out-of-position defender at our disposal who could get goals and assists from an attacking position as well as clean sheet points. He has an outstanding penalty record too.

Eberechi Eze (Crystal Palace, £5.8m, 0.9%)

After scoring the winner against Wolves on Saturday and having created more chances than any teammate over the last four gameweeks, with games against Newcastle, Leeds, Burnley, Brighton and Fulham to look forward to, February cold be a month to remember for the attacking midfielder who arguably has the best fixture run in the league.
