Final defeat takes shine off double as Muller ponders missed chance

Bayern Munich striker Thomas Muller admitted he "wasn't feeling great" after missing a great opportunity to potentially change the course of the Champions League final against Inter Milan in Madrid.

Inter won the match 2-0 thanks to Diego Milito's strikes in either half, but it could have been a different story if Muller had made the most of his goalscoring chance right at the start of the second period when the score was only 1-0.

Bayern had produced little to worry Inter goalkeeper Julio Cesar before the break, but they created a great opening inside 30 seconds of the re-start when Ivica Olic and Hamit Altintop combined to set up the unmarked Muller.

However, the 20-year-old was unable to make the most of the opening as Cesar saved his shot with his legs, and although Bayern continued to dominate possession after that they would not get any better chances before Milito wrapped up Inter's win in the 70th minute.

Muller said: "The missed chance in the 46th minute was a bitter moment for me. It's another reason why I'm not feeling great just now."

The defeat meant Bayern came up short in their bid to become the first German team to win the treble having already won their domestic league and cup competitions.

It also denied Bayern coach Louis van Gaal the chance to become only the third manager to win the European Cup with separate teams following his success with Ajax in 1995.

Muller added following the loss: "It's a massive disappointment for both me and for the team and the supporters.

"It would have been the crowning glory, we could have made it a golden season, but we've finished with a defeat in the biggest of the finals.

"That takes some of the shine off the double."
