A header in extra-time from Graeme Lee saw Doncaster Rovers joyously triumph 3-2 at Bristol Rovers’ expense in Cardiff.

Doncaster were afforded a dream start and went 2-0 up inside five minutes, Jonathan Forte netting after 43 seconds and Paul Heffernan - who hit nine goals to be the top-scorer in that season’s competition - quickly adding a second.

The Pirates, roared on by 40,000 fans, drew level in the second half through goals from Richard Walker (pen) and Sammy Igoe. But it was Doncaster’s day.

Rovers knocked out Huddersfield, Hartlepool, Accrington, Darlington and Crewe en route to winning the final, with Jason Price being their semi-final hero.

A brace from predatory striker Nigel Jemson - who netted in each half - ensured Autowindscreens Shields Trophy for Rotherham, who beat Shrewsbury 2-1 in front of 20,000 Millers fans at Wembley.

Jemson put United ahead on 20 minutes following Shaun Goater’s pull-back and was the beneficiary of a ricochet just before the half mark to add a second.

Mark Taylor pulled one back for the Shrews late on, but the trophy was Rotherham’s, having hammered Carlisle in the semi-final and also disposed of the likes of York, Lincoln and Wigan.

1993-94 Penalty woe for Huddersfield.

Huddersfield Town endured a penalty disaster, scoring just once from four spot-kicks in a Wembley final loss to Frank Burrows’s Swansea City after the final ended deadlocked at 1-1.
