Flashback 1966: FA Cup joy for Hull City and Sheffield Wednesday

IT was a time of much-needed FA Cup cheer for two of Yorkshire's clubs back in 1966 '“ at least if you were Third Division Hull City and top-flight Sheffield Wednesday, who both booked a place in the quarter-finals.

Just under 150 days prior to England being crowned World Cup champions, Alan Brown’s Sheffield Wednesday kept their hopes of silverware alive at the expense of Huddersfield Town, beating the Terriers 2-1 at Leeds Road.

Steve Smith scored for Huddersfield but the Owls proved too strong as goals from David Ford and Brian Usher gave them the victory.

After seeing off Division Two hopefuls Southampton in the previous round, 40,000 fans packed into Boothferry Park as Hull City saw of Fourth Division Southport 2-0 to also seal a place in the last eight with Ken Wagstaff scoring both goals for the Tigers.

In the league, Leeds United went into the weekend in third place in Division One, unbeaten in their last four, with their game away at Northampton Town sandwiched between two legs against Hungarian side Ujpest Dozsa in the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup.

Northampton triumphed 2-1 as Michael O’Grady’s goal couldn’t stop the Whites from dropping three points to the relegation favourites.

Middlesbrough, in a relegation battle in Division Two, defeated Bristol City 4-2 at Ayresome Park – a stadium that would be used in the upcoming World Cup finals.

In Division Three, York City’s poor form continued as they were beaten 1-0 away to Bournemouth.

The result left the Minstermen in danger of relegation as they remained bottom of the league and went five points adrift.

Doncaster Rovers’ push for promotion from Division Four remained on track as they beat Rochdale 2-0 at Belle Vue to move upto fifth.

Also in Division Four, Bradford City remained just two points off the bottom of the league as they were beaten 2-1 by top of the table Chester City at Valley Parade while Barnsley were victorious away to Notts County, 1-0.

Halifax Town recorded a slender 1-0 win over Crewe Alexandra, avenging the 3-0 defeat in the league just two weeks previous.

Playing on a Monday evening Bradford Park Avenue, also playing in the fourth tier, were left empty handed as they were beaten 3-1 by Newport County.
