EXACTLY a decade ago, a host of Yorkshire sides were scrapping for points at both ends of their respective tables, just as they are now - proof that some things just don't change in football.

The corresponding weekend 10 years ago on March 10-12, 2006 saw one or two surprise results and thrills and spills with plenty of drama arriving at Elland Road.

Leeds United, under Kevin Blackwell, saw their unbeaten streak extend to nine matches, but the high-fliers had to settle for a point in a 2-2 fluctuating draw with Norwich City.

Rob Hulse gave the Whites an interval lead, but strikes from future Leeds player Andrew Hughes and Paul McVeigh put the Canaries 2-1 ahead going into the dying stages, but Eddie Lewis’s stoppage-time strike rescued a point.

Meanwhile, Yorkshire’s other second-tier promotion chaser – Sheffield United – saw a shot fired across their bows in a surprise 2-0 reverse at Coventry City.

First-half goals from Gary McSheffrey and Dele Adebola did the trick for the second-placed Sky Blues against Neil Warnock’s Blades, who suffered defeat at the Midlanders’ home just as Sheffield Wednesday had a month earlier.

Wednesday were in need of points for a different reason towards the other end of the table, but had to settle for just one in a 1-1 draw with visiting QPR, although at least the Owls ended a four-match losing sequence.

Deon Burton put the hosts ahead early on, but Marc Bircham levelled just before the break for the R’s.

Another struggler in Hull City secured a 1-0 home success over Plymouth Argyle, thanks to Craig Fagan’s 55th-minute strike.

In the top-flight, Middlesbrough were in action on a Sunday at Charlton Athletic - just as they are 10 years on - and they will be hoping for a happier valley this time around going down 2-1 in south-east London a decade ago.

Steve McClaren’s Boro, who had claimed a famous Uefa Cup victory over Italian giants Roma at the Riverside three days earlier, succumbed to a Darren Bent brace, with his 86th-minute winner coming five minutes after Mark Viduka’s leveller.

Boro got their revenge later on in March 2006, knocking the Addicks out of the FA Cup in a quarter-final replay.

In the third-tier, Huddersfield Town and Barnsley were both going for promotion, but both suffering miserable away defeats by identical 3-1 margins.

Peter Jackson’s Town had a Friday night to forget in Hartlepool, with home goals coming from Adam Boyd, Michael Maidens and Joel Porter, with David Graham replying for the visitors.

Andy Ritchie’s Reds were undone by a brace from ex-Owls forward Lloyd Owusu - including a penalty - and a Ricky Newman goal in a 3-1 reverse at Brentford - Tommy Wright netting for the Oakwell outfit.

After a 2-2 derby draw at Huddersfield Town, Dave Penney’s Doncaster Rovers also had to settle for a share of the spoils in a 1-1 home draw with Port Vale.

Leo Fortune-West gave Rovers the lead just before the hour mark, but future Leeds forward Leon Constantine levelled for Vale four minutes from time.

A strike just before the interval from Damion Stewart gave Bradford City a 1-0 win at Bournemouth.

Struggling Rotherham United were also by the seaside and got back on an even keel after a 4-0 derby home loss to Chesterfield with a 0-0 draw at Blackpool.
