Rovers have won their last five league matches, and with Hull City hosting Lincoln City, a sixth will put them in the automatic promotion places. Richards has scored in the last three.

It speaks volumes for a player who joined on loan from Brighton and Hove Albion with question marks about his attitude, and for coach Darren Moore that he was undeterred.

“The slate’s wiped clean,” argues Moore. “We’re trying to show them how to use their talents in the best possible way.

“The longer he (Richards) is playing consistently, (the more) his skills are coming to the fore.

“He scored another terrific goal on Saturday. We’ll keep working with him in training, keep testing and challenging him, and hopefully see him keep rising to the levels beyond.

“We’re still building his match-fitness and robustness.”

Left-back Cameron John says Doncaster’s youngsters are in a perfect place.

“We’re all willing to learn,” he says. “It’s great to have this environment.”

The next step for the club says Moore is to develop more of their own players and be less dependent on loanees.

“I really am looking at our under-18s,” he stresses.

“I speak to (coach) Gary McSheffrey numerous times about young players coming through.

“There’s definitely some good players in and around Doncaster and we’ve got to attract them to play for the Rovers.”
