Footballer sentenced for attacks on women

A SHEFFIELD United footballer has been given a community order after admitting hitting one woman in the face and headbutting another during a night out.

Callum McFadzean, 19, pleaded guilty yesterday to two counts of assault at Sheffield Magistrates’ Court.

In the early hours of Sunday, October 6, CCTV operators monitoring Sheffield city centre saw a man slapping one woman and then, shortly afterwards, headbutting another woman in Carver Street.

The man was seen leaving the area but police officers caught up with him and found him to be footballer McFadzean, of Beckton Avenue in Waterthorpe, Sheffield.

Before magistrates in Sheffield yesterday, McFadzean pleaded guilty to two counts of assault. He was given a 12-month community order with a supervision requirement.

Following the sentencing, Acting Detective Inspector David Turner of South Yorkshire Police said: “People have a right to feel safe when they go on a night out in Sheffield city centre.

“Drunken behaviour and nasty assaults such as this cannot be tolerated and will be dealt with robustly by South Yorkshire Police.”

District judge Sheila Driver told the player she was not considering custody in his case. Two charges of threatening behaviour were left to lie on file.

McFadzean, a midfielder, has played seven senior games for the Blades this season after coming through the ranks at his home-town club.
