Becchio spent the first half of the 2014-15 season on loan at the New York Stadium, with a record of two goals in five games, but had to return to Norwich after suffering a long-term injury.

He signed for Belgrano in the summer but ended his contract and returned to Europe to regain his fitness before going on trial with Rotherham.

Here are four reasons why signing Becchio until the end of the season could be a good decision for the Millers ...

1 - He is a proven goalscorer

Becchio’s two goals in five games in the Championship for Rotherham give an indication of what he is capable of, but his goalscoring record during his time at Elland Road is difficult to look past.

He was prolific in League One, when he played more of a support role to Jermaine Beckford, and he continued his goalscoring feats when Leeds reached the second tier.

In the league he scored 19 in the year after promotion, 11 in an injury-hit second season and 15 in 26 in his final six months.

By the time he exited he was Leeds’ 10th All-Time Goalscorer in the league with 76 goals. Rotherham need a proven goalscorer. They may just have one.

2) Rotherham have been able to test his fitness

Neil Redfearn might have wanted to keep Becchio’s trial under wraps, but he was spotted at the New York Stadium about 20 minutes before a press conference two weeks ago.

It was then revealed that Rotherham have had Becchio on trial since the start of January. This should give fans hope - at no point has the Argentinian broken down.

In fact, from the first week of his trial Redfearn has been clear that Becchio looks to be in good shape.

There was a noticeable difference between the Becchio that joined Rotherham on loan last season and the leaner Becchio prior to the press conference.

They have tested him out and decided he is worth a deal.

3) He has an exceptional working relationship with Neil Redfearn

There will be few managers Becchio will have wanted to work with more than Redfearn.

Redfearn only took charge of Leeds for one short spell while Becchio was at Elland Road, but the affection between the two was clear.

When the 32-year-old scored against Doncaster Rovers in the last game of Redfearn’s caretaker spell, he charged straight over to the dugout to embrace the former Barnsley midfielder.

Redfearn also wanted to sign Becchio when he was in charge of Leeds.

The two have remained in touch, and the manager was integral to Becchio joining the Millers.

4) He has a point to prove

It is fair to say that Becchio has not had the best career since deciding to leave Leeds to join Norwich City.

His Premier League dream developed into a nightmare, and he has only played a grand total of 21 times since January 2013.

Becchio is convinced that his career is not over, and at 32 he is running out of time to show that to be the case.

That’s ideal for a club battling against relegation. Former Leeds chief Simon Grayson described Becchio as his “matador”.

He is clearly up for a fight.
