Foyle recruits for new promotion bid

Manager Martin Foyle has been busy in the transfer market over the summer in his attempt to take the next step and lead the Minstermen back into the Football League.

Failure to take them up via the play-offs, following a 3-1 defeat to Oxford United in front of over 42,000 fans at Wembley in May, has made Foyle more determined to complete the job this time.

They kick off a new Blue Square Bet Premier season at home to Kidderminster on Saturday and one of Foyle's new signings is former Harriers winger David McDermott.

Histon goalkeeper David Knight has also joined on loan for the season to keep up the pressure on first-choice Michael Ingham.

Greg Young is expected to press for a place in central defence after recovering from a heel injury and Duane Courtney replaces Ben Purkiss at right-back with fellow new arrivals Peter Till and Jonathan Smith pressing for midfield roles.

Top scorer Richard Brodie will lead the attack and new signing George Purcell will be pushing for a place alongside him.

"You can see there's a good, healthy competition for places. Pre-season has gone as well as I have expected, but I have been frustrated with the players we have had out injured," said Foyle.

York won 3-0 at North Ferriby on Saturday and complete pre-season preparations at Ilkeston today.
