FT: Barnsley 1-0 Burnley - Flitcroft encouraged by win

Managerless Barnsley earned brief respite from their league troubles with a late win against Burnley to advance to the fourth round of the FA Cup.

Caretaker manager David Flitcroft celebrated a first win in charge of the club, who hope to name a successor to Keith Hill in the next week.

Barnsley director Don Rowing revealed on Friday that there are five names on the shortlist with former Doncaster boss Sean O’Driscoll the odds-on favourite to replace axed Barnsley chief Hill.

On the pitch, Barnsley won at home for the first time since September thanks to a late Danny Rose strike.

Burnley were reduced to 10 just five minutes before the break when former Doncaster midfielder Brian Stock was sent off for a second bookable offence.

And Barnsley finally got a breakthrough against the 10 men with five minutes remaining as Rose scored.

Flitcroft made just one change for this FA Cup encounter at Oakwell.

With Craig Davies set for a £300,000 move to Bolton after triggering a release clause in his contract, Marlon Harewood was given the job of leading the line against the Clarets.

Flitcroft said: “We’ve worked hard and fought well. Burnley are a good team who put you under pressure and we stood up to them.

“The second half we completely dominated, but after we scored the goal they pushed us. We need a bit of calmness and that’s only what’s missing.

“There’s a lot to look forward to at this football club, you look at the energy and commitment of the youngsters. John Stones – the world is this boy’s oyster and people are taking notice of him.”
