Fulham v Sheffield Wednesday: David Jones feels he has settled into new role with Wednesday

The midfielder started the season playing for Burnley in the Premier League against Swansea, before the Owls triggered a release clause in his Turf Moor contract.

Jones opted to drop down to the Championship to join Wednesday but has had to be patient in the opening months of the campaign.

He has featured just nine times – a red card at Brentford did not help his cause – but the 32-year-old is now an integral part of Carlos Carvalhal’s midfield.

He has taken over the defensive holding role vacated by Sam Hutchinson’s switch to centre-back and Jones admits he has had to adapt his game since arriving from Burnley.

“Coming to a new club, managers will aways have different ideas and philosophies to what I have experienced before,” said Jones.

“It does take time, and for me personally, it’s a different style of play to what I had at my previous club. The manager wants you to do different things.

“As the months go on, training, getting to know the manager and players, and how they play becomes easier to be able to slot in. A bit of time does help.

“When I have played, I have enjoyed it and fulfilled the role I think the manager has been asking me to do.

“Maybe I didn’t start a few games, but it was good to watch and learn (from the sidelines). It helped me look at what I needed to be doing to get myself in the team, and what the manager expected of me. It does take time, getting to know what the manager wants, but I feel like I have settled in well.

“Burnley probably played a more rigid formation. There’s a lot more fluidity in the way we play.

“I did have a defensive spin on the role at Burnley, covering, and blocking routes of attack.

“That comes with experience as well, over the years, your reading becomes a lot better.”

Today, the Owls travel to in-form Fulham looking to return to winning ways after back-to-back defeats before the international break against Derby County and Ipswich Town.

“Fulham are a good team, an attacking threat, and play some good stuff,” said Jones.

“Obviously, when you get a defeat you want to get back on the pitch as soon as possible and put it right. But the break has given us time to reflect, work on some things, and have a chat as a squad.”
