“I thought we performed really well and at times the decision making was excellent.

“We showed what we have to do going forward, we had a game plan and stuck to it. I’m proud of this group.”

Former FC Halifax Town boss Neil Aspin had led his Gateshead to being the form team in the division since the start of 2017, they looked dangerous with Jordan Burrow narrowly heading wide with just a minute gone.

But the away side were the ones celebrating early when a Kevan Hurst pass across the face of goal found Jake Lawlor who had a simple tap-in to give Guiseley the lead.

Gateshead are fighting for a place in the play-off places and they had several more chances in the first half, Wes York had two chances first he overhit an effort from the edge of the area, he was then somehow denied by Jonny Maxted with his thunderbolt of a shot going towards the top corner but the visitors keeper got a hand onto the ball and pushed it away.

Guiseley though so nearly doubled their advantage when Jordan Preston found room in the area and on the angle shot narrowly wide.

Guiseley though handed Gateshead a way back into the game when a Derek Asamoah back heel fell to York who fired his effort into the top corner.

This gave Aspin’s side the boost they needed they needed took the lead for the first time when a York cross found George Smith at the back post, but he could only hit the side netting.
