For the second game running, Barnsley produced a miraculous late finale to clinch a win, with a goal in the first minute of stoppage-time from Clarke Oduor securing a richly-deserved win.

An equaliser from Josh Da Silva which cancelled out Callum Styles's opener looked like ensuring relegation to the third tier for the Reds - for the third time in seven seasons.

But Oduor turned in a cross at the death from Patrick Schmidt to win the game for the visitors, who were able to move out of the relegation zone for the first time since mid-September, thanks to results elsewhere and factoring in Wigan's 12-point penalty.

The Latics drew their final game with Fulham, while Leeds United did Barnsley a big favour by beating Charlton 4-0.

Barnsley's thrilling success spoiled the Bees' last ever league game at Griffin Park in 116 years - on a night when a victory for the Londoners which have clinched automatic promotion. They now face the play-offs.

West Brom - who drew 2-2 with QPR and would have been overhauled with a Brentford win - finish as runners-up to Leeds and accompany them to the Premier League.

The win sealed a remarkable Great Escape act for Struber, who will now take a break to contemplate his future, with his exploits likely to have not gone unnoticed at other clubs.

Struber, who joined the club in November, said: "I have no words for my feeling. I am proud of my boys, They fought so hard and made a brilliant game against a big opponent, Now we have the energy for a big party and after that, I must sleep for a week.'

"We are definitely safe. I am very happy and thank the supporters for the big energy. Now it is time to celebrate and to make a big party and not think about the future and enjoy the time in the here and now."

On the impact of Styles and Oduor, who scored their first goals for the club on an unforgettable night, the Austrian added: "Eight weeks ago, I told my boys that I needed every player in the squad and I think Callum and Clarkey scored the most important goals in this season. Every player showed me he is a team player.

"Clarkey had not played a lot and not had so much game time and had a hard time, but he was ready to take his chance and he was ready for his most important job."

"Now it is party time."
