Gerhard Struber wants ‘completely different mindset’ from his Barnsley players

GERHARD STRUBER admits that he is grateful for the fact that Barnsley return to action so swiftly tomorrow – in their quest to put Saturday’s atrocious performance at Stoke City behind them.

The first leg of the Reds’ key triple-header against relegation rivals proved a disastrous afternoon as Struber’s side went down 4-0 at the bet365 Stadium.

It took Stoke’s goal tally against Barnsley this season to eight after a similarly damaging 4-2 win at Oakwell in November in Michael O’Neill’s first game in charge.

For Barnsley, attention now quickly switches to Tuesday’s huge encounter at bottom-of-the-table Luton Town, who crashed 5-0 at home to Reading on Saturday and were similarly abject.

Happy at the quick turnaround, Struber said: “It is a big advantage for everyone and we can change the picture. We have the chance to change it and it is my job to give the boys a good feeling and a good plan.

“Everyone has a responsibility for a good self-motivation.

“It was a big game (at Stoke) and we did not have the right performance. For everyone, I hope this is a big ‘kick-off’ especially for Tuesday. We need a completely different mindset and we have no time to sleep or be surprised.

“My responsibility and for every single player is to be self-critical with themselves and this is important.”

Acknowledging that his side could not cope with Stoke’s set-piece threat in particular, the Austrian added: “Especially after 10 minutes when they got the second goal, I think it was a question of mindset for many players. They completely lost our plan.

“In set-pieces, they had a big advantage and we were not clear or ready at this moment. I think it was the game pressure for us.

“We had nothing from everyone and it was a very disappointing moment.”

Editor’s note: first and foremost - and rarely have I written down these words with more sincerity - I hope this finds you well.
