Since joint caretaker managers Mark Trueman and Conor Sellars took charge, the Bantams have taken seven points out of a possible nine, with centre-forward Novak scoring in two games. The 2-1 win at Grimsby Town was the first time since New Year’s Day City have completed back-to-back league wins but Novak wants more.

“We’ve only got three results,” he cautioned. “We need to put a big run together. “There’s no way we should be 18th in League Two. With the players we’ve got, we should be a lot higher.

“We have to put five or six wins together and, when you do that, it does breed confidence.”

The 32-year-old sees no reason why they cannot, having been helped by Trueman and Sellars’s eye for detail.

“The hardest thing is getting the first win and on Saturday we showed the grit to see out a win against a good team (Cambridge United),” he argued.

“It is a confident group, even when things aren’t going our way. It might not look that way but it is.

“They (Trueman and Sellars) have been brilliant from day one in the way they’ve conducted themselves on the training ground, the meetings we do, the depth they go to knowing our opponents. It’s shown on the pitch. They have what it takes to be managers, 100 per cent.”

When Stuart McCall was sacked, City aimed to have a new man in place against Grimsby. Trueman is pleased to have bought them extra thinking time.

“It helps give them time to make a decision,” said Trueman, who took over saying he did not want the job full-time, but is now softening on that. “Myself and Conor just keep working hard to improve these group of players until we are told otherwise.”
