The highly-rated 20-year-old shot-stopper, who made 34 appearances for the Latics in League One last term, has signed a three-year deal after Town agreed a deal with the managerless Lancastrians.

The Bolton-born 6ft 6in keeper has played almost 45 times for Oldham since making his debut in March 2015 and came to prominence in the second half of last season under John Sheridan, who left last month to takle over at Notts County.

His signing follows on from the captures of German duo Michael Hefele and Chris Lowe for next season, along with Wolves winger Rajiv Van La Parra.

Head coach David Wagner said: “Joel will arrive at the club to challenge for the number one position and with potential to develop into a fantastic goalkeeper.

“It is unusual for a goalkeeper aged 20 to have Joel’s first-team experience and he has shown lots of potential in his performances for Oldham, which we have watched closely.”
