Man Utd have struggled at left-back all season after the injury suffered by Luke Shaw, which may explain their interest in the Scottish 21-year-old.

Brentford manager Dean Smith has urged his club’s board to sign Alan Judge to a new deal in order to stave off interest from other clubs.

Sheffield Wednesday were one of the teams that made an enquiry about the midfielder in January, only to be told that it would cost them £8 million to sign him.

Asked about whether the club should offer him a new deal, Smith said: “Yes, I’ve waxed lyrical about him before.

“He’s a very good footballer for us and, for the rest of the team as well, he adds that bit of experience.”

Sheffield Wednesday have also allowed Jeremy Helan to join Championship rivals Wolves on a loan deal until the end of the season.

Rotherham United manager Neil Warnock has admitted that the club might not have the players.

Speaking after the Reading game to BBC Radio Sheffield, he said: “We are tighter though we probably just lack a little bit of quality.

“We are lacking something - what I don’t know. I’d like to think we are going to start with at least two if not three up front on Saturday against Brentford - I mean, what have we got to lose?”
