Grant McCann handed 'food for thought' by Martin Samuelsen

HULL CITY manager Grant McCann admits that attacking midfielder Martin Samuelsen has provided him with 'food for thought' after his vibrant performance in the midweek Papa John's Trophy win at Harrogate Town.

The former West Ham player expertly set up James Scott for the Tigers' breakthrough 15 minutes from time in the 2-0 win at the CNG Stadium - to crown an impressive performance in the number ten role.

It strengthened his claims to be involved from the start at league level for Hull, who are without Northern Ireland forward Josh Magennis for Saturday's home game with Burton.

McCann, whose side can qualify for the next stage of the competition if they draw next Tuesday night in their final group game at Grimsby Town, said: "He (Samuelsen) has got good competition there.

"Unfortunately, for him, the boys in his position have been showing goals and have a presence in that position. But as people will have seen, that number position is the one that he really likes.

"He gives us food for thought if we play two holding midfield players and a number ten (on Saturday). I was pleased with him."

Specifically discussing his forward options for Saturday in the absence of Magennis, McCann added: "We have good options in that position, which is pleasing. Malik, James Scott and Martin can play there and Tom Eaves.

"He (Eaves) had a good chance in the second half, which if you ask Eavesy, he should have scored and one in the first half which was ruled offside, which was very close.

"I just think he was a wee bit unfortunate. He is coming back from an injury and trying to build up fitness. There's definitely more to come from Tom and hopefully we will see that very soon."

Meanwhile, McCann confirmed that keeper George Long was not involved on Tuesday as a precaution with his wife having experienced some symptoms associated with Covid-19.

On Long, who was scheduled to play - only for Matt Ingram to start in goal - added: "His wife has some Coronavirus symptoms, so we decided not to bring George into the training ground (on Tuesday).

"We did not want to take the risk of him infecting others if he does test positive. We will know the outcome of those results (soon) and just wish George and his wife the best of luck and I hope he is back soon."
