Grant McCann hits back at 'negative' Hull City critics

Seven days off from their elimination to the Red Imps on penalties in the Papa John’s Trophy, the visitors had cause to be the happier at the end again after taking home a point.

Hull have now scored just once in their past four league games and their total of 15 goals in 13 matches in East Yorkshire is the worst home goals for record in the top half of the table.

But McCann, whose side won 4-0 at Portsmouth last month, insists that their goalscoring capabilities are not overly hindering their progress, with the Tigers having the best goals for statistics on the road in League One with 26 goals.

Their defensive record on home soil is also the best in the division, with City having conceded just seven times.

On his side’s draw with Lincoln, McCann said: “I would not say frustrated. I thought we were excellent, performance-wise.

“We have taken the game to the league leaders again and I feel we were the better team in both (matches). Obviously, I am frustrated we never got the goal with the amount of opportunities we created.

“But in terms of our general play, I thought we were excellent.”

Specifically on the charge that his forwards are lacking punch up front at the minute - after drawing a blank for the past two matches, he added: “You get spells like that in a season.

“Unfortunately, for us, it has happened in the last two games. The performance levels have been very good and that is all we can go off.

“We are creating the chances. Our three who finished the game (on Tuesday) are right up there in terms of most goals scored from a front three in the division in Mallik (Wilks), Keane (Lewis-Potter) and Josh (Magennis) and there is more to come from them, for sure.

“As long as we keep creating the chances, the goals will come.

“Of course, we have got faith. We are right up there in terms of the highest goalscorers in the league and we are very good defensively.

“There is going to be a lot of negativity, but we will stay positive. We are a very good team and squad and we are creating good opportunities and playing good football.”
