Grant McCann not interested in criticism of his 'excellent' Hull City players

Grant McCann launched a staunch defence of his "excellent" Hull City players in the wake of Wednesday's defeat at Bristol City.

A 2-1 reverse in another game that the Tigers really ought to have taken more from saw them slip back into the Championship relegation zone with just four fixtures remaining this term.

This loss was their third in five matches since the season resumed following coronavirus lockdown.

City's performance at Ashton Gate arguably warranted more, as did recent showings against Birmingham - where they drew 3-3 - and at title-chasing West Bromwich Albion, a contest they lost 4-2.

Thus, McCann insists that there is plenty to be positive about, regardless of the fact that his charges have managed just a single league victory in 16 attempts.

"We're in a situation here where we're fighting for our lives. We've got four games now where we need to stick together," he said.

"I'll let everybody else outside the camp think of what we need and what we haven't done and make those comments regarding one win in this, one win in that, the defence is rubbish, etc, etc.

"That's everyone else's opinion, all we can do is focus on the next game.

"The boys are excellent, doing everything they can and fighting really hard to try and get these wins.

"Going forward, we are looking a real threat in every game we've played so far, probably bar the Charlton game. Of course we need to be better defensively.

"In terms of their performance, and work ethic, I couldn't fault them [at Bristol], but of course we're disappointed with the defeat."

While City have looked dangerous as an attacking force in their last four outings, their propensity for giving away soft goals continues to damage their hopes of survival.

It is now 16 Championship games since they kept a clean-sheet, while their defence has been breached 36 times in the 13 matches since the January transfer window closed.

And although he is aware that his side need to improve at the back, McCann is adamant that they are doing their best.

"We're playing against very good teams every week, so we know teams are gonna have opportunities and chances against us, it's just the way it is," he added.

"Yes, we have to be better defensively as a team. Of course we do. We've got what we've got at the minute and the boys are doing everything they can to try and keep the ball out of the net."
