Aspin hopes Halifax’s luck will start to turn

The Shaymen make the long trip to Eastleigh today in third spot in the Vanarama Conference with Aspin’s side having had no hangover after their play-off semi-final loss to Cambridge United in May.

Halifax have been at the business end of the division from day one and while a fair bit has gone their way, Aspin believes their position would have been even better if a few more things had fallen for them.

The Shay chief was left to bemoan misfortune after Marc Roberts was controversially dismissed in Tuesday’s 2-2 draw with Wrexham; he will miss today’s game in Hampshire.

The rub of the green has also gone against Halifax in a number of other games this season, according to Aspin, who is seeking some redress in the weeks ahead.

His side are one point adrift of second-placed Gateshead and four behind leaders Barnet.

Aspin said: “Hopefully we are going to get a decision and a bit of luck in the future and I’d like it to start on Saturday.

“There is luck involved in football; we have not had much luck this season.

“Certainly at Bristol Rovers with the deflection, the deflection at home to Lincoln and the goal we should have got at Macclesfield.”

The absence of centre-half Roberts will represent a negative for Halifax, but striker Danny Hattersley is confident the side will be able to cope with his absence as they strive to end a week which has yielded just a solitary point from two home games in positive fashion.

The loss to Altrincham last weekend and draw with Wrexham in midweek represents Halifax’s first wobble of the season, but Hattersley says their glass is very much half full

He said: “Obviously it’s difficult when you lose a player who is as influential as Marc, but somebody else will come in and do a job and I think with the rest of the team we have we should be able to cope without him.

“He’s normally one of the first names on the team sheet and I think we will probably miss his throw-ins, but we have got a good side here and we should be okay.

“Coming off the back of a bad defeat and then a draw obviously we will be looking to get back to winning, but I think it is important that we did not get beat twice in a row.”
