FC Halifax 1 Aldershot 0: Dyer’s strike enough for Halifax to prosper

Neil Aspin said his FC Halifax Town team did enough to win after overcoming Aldershot at the Shay to stay joint-top of the Conference Premier.

Ross Dyer’s first goal for the Shaymen sealed their fourth consecutive home win of the season during a nervy second-half.

On the day Aspin was named manager of the month, his side were made to work hard by the Shots, but the Town boss said his side’s improved second-half showing merited the win.

“It was a very tough game,” said Aspin.“I thought the first half was very poor, and that’s no slight on Aldershot because the onus is on us as the home team to play better than we did and to put them under pressure, which we didn’t do.

“After the break, we did a lot better and I felt in the end we deserved to win the game.”

The visitors started well and created numerous chances, with Adrian Forbes forcing a fine save from the hosts’ goalkeeper Matt Glennon.

Halifax’s Jamie Jackson – twice – and Steve Williams both had good chances inside the area and, at the other end, James Bolton blocked a goalbound shot from Josh Scott.

Scott Boden went close twice within five minutes of the restart, before – against the run of play – Jordan Roberts forced a good save from Glennon.

Then, from an excellent Adam Smith cross, substitute Dyer collected the ball at the far post before slotting past Smith.

Other chances came for Boden, Dyer and Danny Scholfield but the one goal proved to be enough on the day.
