Head-to-head - How Carlos Carvalhal and David Wagner shape up ahead of Hillsborough derby

With just four points between them, there is very little between the derby rivals, who have both benefitted hugely from their rival European managers.

Carvalhal took charge of Sheffield Wednesday in June 2015, pretty much an unknown quantity in England but bringing with him the experience of managing 16 teams. The Portuguese has won 37 of his 83 games for the Owls, memorably guiding them to sixth place and a play-off final appearance last term. He boasts a win percentage of 44.6 per cent at the club and that impressive debut campaign that also included a famous 3-0 thumping of Arsenal in the League Cup.

Visiting boss Wagner arrived in England a few months after his opposite number, leaving Borussia Dortmund II to take charge of Huddersfield in November 2015. The German endured a disappointing campaign in his first season in Yorkshire, his side finishing 19th in last season’s Championship. Wagner has won 25 of his 59 games at the helm, his win percentage of 42.4 per cent just falling short of Carvalhal’s.

The two managers have met three times in opposing dugouts, with Carvalhal holding a perfect record over his opposite number.

Wagner endured a difficult start to this fixture in just his second game in charge, the Terriers falling to a 3-1 defeat at Hillsborough in November 2015. The two met again at The John Smith’s Stadium last April, when a Fernando Forestieri strike gave the visitors side a 1-0 win.

In their most recent encounter at Huddersfield in October, it was the Owls again who were celebrating lost out to their Yorkshire rivals in another 1-0 defeat, completing Carvalhal’s hold over Wagner.

Recent history suggests the Owls have the edge over their rivals, but will that continue?
