But Dale hit back with two injury time goals to amazingly seal their first league win of the season.

Rovers boss Darren Ferguson said: "I'm really disappointed with the way the game has ended.

"We got ahead through John, which was a tidy finish, we unfortunately didn't have the composure to get the three points.

"We were really disciplined, under the circumstances with the weather but you know you are always going to get a tough game here.

"It's a big week ahead for us, we will look at the video of tonight's game and hopefully we can catch a break because we haven't so far."

Marquis notched the opener for Rovers on 74 minutes. From a corner, Williams' shot bounced back off a post and there was Marquis to tap home.

Rovers had earlier seen stopper Ian Lawlor save a controversial penalty from Steven Davies.

Once Marquis' goal went in the visitors looked home and hosed going into the last few minutes,.

But then came the comeback.

First, sub Mark Kitching struck an equaliser on 92 minutes that flew past Lawlor.

Inexplicably Rovers failed to even hang on for a point when Steven Davies fired home the winner to send the majority of Spotland into raptures.

Earlier there was drama for Darren Ferguson's side when the hosts were handed a penalty after just seven minutes.

Joe Wright was involved in a tangle with Dale's Olvier Rathbone which led to the referee Ben Toner pointing to the spot - although it was to a backdrop of plenty of Rovers' appeals.

Davies' effort was weak to say the least and Lawlor pulled off a creditable save.
