Hill raids former club as Rams prospect heads to Reds

BARNSLEY manager Keith Hill has wasted no time in spending money from the £1m sale of captain Jason Shackell to Derby County.

Hill has raided former club Rochdale to sign defender Scott Wiseman and midfielder Matthew Done, while midfielder Miles Addison is also moving to Oakwell on a six-month loan deal from Derby.

The deals follow the recent captures of Chesterfield striker Craig Davies and Colchester United midfield player David Perkins.

His next signing is likely to be Brighton and Hove Albion leftback James McNulty but Hill has dismissed any possibility of striker Daniel Bogdanovic returning to the club from Sheffield United.

Commenting on Wiseman and Done, Hill said: “They are players I know very well and I have no doubts about their ability to step up to Championship level. They are both talented players with pace who will fit in with what we are trying to do next season.”

Wiseman, 25, started his career at home-town club Hull City, and is a right-back who also provides cover in the middle of defence.

Done, 22, is a left-sided midfielder who can also play in and around the attack. He has penned a two-year deal with the Tykes and is delighted to be reunited again with his former manager.

Addison, meanwhile, is joining the Tykes on loan until the New Year and will be looking to confirm his return to fitness after a lengthy battle with a foot injury.

Hill believes the former England Under-21 international has the pedigree of a Premier League player.

“We are taking advantage of the situation and giving him the opportunity to re-establish his credentials,” said Hill. “Derby still view him as an integral part of their future plans. We feel he can fulfil his potential again with us.”

Confirming his desire to sign another two defenders, Hill admitted that he was disappointed to lose Shackell to Derby but relieved the deal was done early rather than later in the summer.

“It’s unfortunate that I didn’t get the opportunity to work with Jason because I think I could have helped him improve and fulfil his potential,” said Hill. “But when a player wants to leave, it can have a negative impact on preparations for a new season if they hang around. In that respect, I am glad that the episode is over and we can move on.”

Rotherham United have released striker Ian Thomas-Moore just three months after sacking his father Ronnie as manager.

The former Burnley and Leeds United striker, 34, signed an 18-month deal with the Millers last season and scored three goals in 12 appearances for the club.
