Home form is not a worry claims Milner

Saturday’s 2-2 draw with Switzerland in a Euro 2012 qualifier means England have now gone four matches without a win in front of their own supporters – their worst run since a five-game sequence in 1981.

Fabio Capello’s side lost at home to France and shared the spoils with Montenegro, Ghana and now the Swiss.

The result leaves their automatic qualification hopes hanging in the balance as they still have to visit main challengers Montenegro – who are level on points with the group leaders – in October.

But Manchester City midfielder Milner insists recent results at Wembley are not on the players’ minds.

He said: “I don’t think we are really thinking about that too much. We go into every game to win it.

“We know that on our day we can beat anybody. I think the squad is changing a bit and improving as well. But at Wembley we need to make sure we get the wins. Against Switzerland, we should have got the win.

“At the moment it is not quite happening so we have just got to make sure we don’t let it become an issue and hopefully get a win against Holland (in a friendly encounter in August).

“If we were not getting the chances, it would be a bit more worrying than not winning games.

“But the result is the most important thing at the end of the day, especially in qualifiers.”

Former Leeds United star Milner is relieved that England’s chances of reaching the tournament in Poland and Ukraine are still in their own hands with three games remaining against Bulgaria, Wales and Montenegro.

He said: “That is the good thing. We will go and have a rest now then come back and try to improve again.

“It is in our hands if we win those three games. Like I say, we are more than capable of beating anybody on our day.

“We have got to make sure we learn from our mistakes against Switzerland – and prove it.”
