Homegrown prospect Ben Godfrey exits York City for Premier League Norwich

The 18-year-old midfielder travelled to Norwich to undergo a medical yesterday afternoon.

Assuming Godfrey passed it, the two clubs will sign off on a deal that involves an initial six-figure transfer fee.

The Minstermen had been keen to keep hold of one of their most highly regarded players.

They rejected three bids from the Norfolk club before finally agreeing terms.

The last of those three offers was a package that could potentially rise to more than £1m after the payment of an initial £150,000 fee.

The deal included an offer to loan York a player until the end of the current season. In part, some of the difficulty in keeping Godfrey at Bootham Crescent surrounded his unwillingness to sign a professional contract with the club.

Godfrey was twice offered fresh terms by the Minstermen, but did not accept either of the deals. York would have received a fee set by a tribunal if Godfrey had moved on a free transfer at the end of the season.

Neither club has disclosed the value of the latest offer, but it has matched the expectations of both manager Jackie McNamara and the York board.

The York-born player made 15 first-team appearances for his hometown club after making his debut at the age of 17 against Yeovil Town on August 18.

Eight of his appearances came from the bench, and Godfrey scored once in his time at Bootham Crescent, against Plymouth in a 2-1 loss.

Norwich were not the only side chasing Godfrey.

Yorkshire trio Middlesbrough, Hull City and Barnsley have kept a keen eye on him, while West Brom and Cardiff also expressed an interest.
