How was your weekend? Five talking points for Leeds, Sheffield Wednesday, Middlesbrough, Doncaster Rovers and York City

Just one, poor old York City, saw their colours lowered, but there was a fair bit of joy elsewhere, more especially if you were a Doncaster Rovers or Sheffield United supporter.

There was a welcome three points at Elland Road on a Saturday too for Leeds United and the relief was palpable for Middlesbrough. Again.

Here are five observations from Saturday’s action.

1: Top ten pitch for Leeds United

It’s been a funny old season for the Whites, although the sight of them ending another difficult week for the club on a winning note against Reading was a favourable development, quickly following on from an excellent triumph at Birmingham.

Their latest win leaves them in 12th place and in with a fair chance of a top 10 finish for the first time since 2010-11; intriguingly they are currently three points behind Simon Grayson’s Preston, who they visit on the last day of the season.

Small beer maybe, but a decent response after some tough days in early season. Nice to see Chris Wood now in double figures for the season too.

2: Sheffield Wednesday: an opportunity missed

The Owls have been proficient at following up defeats with a win this season, but Saturday’s draw with Ipswich represented an opportunity missed on a frustrating afternoon when Ipswich keeper Bartosz Bialkowski held firm.

But Wednesday should not fret too much with their performance - aside from a slow start - being a strong one against visitors who are usually obdurate. A second goal was needed, but never came, but there’s no need for overdue alarm.

The Owls are five points above seventh-placed Cardiff City in the last of the play-off places with four games to play. That is still a good position.

3: Middlesbrough ... another last-gasp win

Boro are taking dramatic late winners to another level, following up their last-gasp exploits against Reading with another precious stoppage-time winner at Bolton, with Jordan Rhodes repaying an instalment on his considerable fee with a 91st-minute strike.

Rhodes’s winner was just as well on a weekend when Burnley - Boro’s next opponents - and Brighton both won.

Boro found a way again and showed bags of character as they were forced to go for it right until the end in another emotionally-wrought, thoroughly tense denouement with three of the Teessiders’ six wins on the spin being secured in added-on time.

4: Terrific win for Doncaster Rovers, but a sense of ‘if only.’

It finally all came together for Doncaster, who produced arguably their best performance of a fitful campaign to inflict a first league defeat in 21 matches upon leaders Wigan since December 12, the visitors also going down on their travels for the first time since September 12.

Rovers, meanwhile, ended their demons with a first league win in 17, but they remain in dire straits, six points adrift of safety with four games to go.

Darren Ferguson’s men were pumped-up and produced an exhilarating high-octane display to stun Wigan. But is it too late? Quite possibly ...

5: Game all but up for York City

York’s terrible season took another turn for the worse in a 2-1 loss at Hartlepool and they are now on the brink of relegation back to the Conference, which they have, in truth, been staring in the face for a number of weeks.

Nine points adrift of safety with just four games left, the Minstermen - whose misery was compounded by the dismissal of key defender Dave Winfield - will be relegated if they lose to Portsmouth on Tuesday and even then three points might not be enough depending on results on Stevenage and Newport.

Effectively, it is all over bar the shouting.
