Fulham, who also struck the woodwork through Cauley Woodrow, made the points safe in the sixth minute of stoppage time when Seko Fofana broke clear and slotted home the rebound after his first effort came back off thae post.

Powell said: “This game never ceases to amaze me. After minute two and before minute 96 it was one-way traffic. We hit the post, hit the bar and missed two penalties. We just couldn’t get the ball in the net.”

Kit Symons described his side’s victory, which included a red-card controversy, as “probably the most bizarre game I have ever been involved in”.

There was chaos around the hour mark when Shaun Hutchinson handled on the line only for referee Richard Clark to dismiss Woodrow. Fulham players protested and Clark consulted his assistant before sending off Hutchinson.
