Huddersfield 1 Birmingham 1: Wagner now left to seek a cutting edge

David Wagner admits Huddersfield's finishing needs to improve after centre-back Joel Lynch scored the equaliser.

The Terriers created a host of chances but rarely tested visiting goalkeeper Tomasz Kuszczak in a game which had little riding on it at the John Smith’s Stadium.

Wagner said: “We had problems with our finishing and we need to do better.

“Our shots were not good enough and a lot were blocked or went wide. We did not make their goalkeeper work hard enough.

“His only real save was in overtime at the end of the game.”

The hosts failed to make their dominance count against the only top-10 side they have beaten this season.

Huddersfield won 2-0 at St Andrew’s in December to give Wagner his first win in charge but in the return chances for Joe Lolley and Nahki Wells went begging.

Kuszczak saved from Emyr Huws in the first half and substitute Karim Matmour with the last touch of the game but in between Huddersfield were wasteful.

Welsh winger David Cotterill scored an impressive free-kick in the 73rd minute after Dean Whitehead had fouled Will Buckley on the edge of the area.

Cotterill curled the ball around the wall and into the bottom corner – adding to his stunner in Birmingham’s 1-0 victory at the John Smith’s Stadium last season.

With eight minutes left Lynch grabbed the point which was the least Town deserved when he connected with Sean Scannell’s drive and prodded home.
