Queens Park Rangers are understood to have made a £2m bid for the goalkeeper, who was left out of Saturday’s match.

The 25-year-old new father, who has made 274 appearances for Town, was replaced by Joe Murphy, who is set to continue against Brighton tomorrow.

Manager Chris Powell said: “I was informed of the situation on Friday night, and after talking to Alex and other people at the club, made the decision it wasn’t right to play him.

“We are very proud of him. He has come through the youth system and there aren’t many young England goalkeepers around. We will see what happens in the next few days.”

Powell was pleased with his players after successive defeats. “We were on the front foot and wanted the crowd with us but again we came up against a keeper who made some good saves.”

Nathan Delfouneso pounced for the equaliser less than a minute after coming on, with another substitute, Fode Koita, providing an assist.

Koita replaced former Town striker Jordan Rhodes, who limped off early in the second half with an ankle injury after being felled by Dean Whitehead.

Rovers turned down a £12m bid from Middlesbrough but Rhodes is still tipped for a move.

Nahki Wells put Town ahead in the 10th minute, pouncing on the ball after Sean Scannell crossed for Ishmael Miller to force a parry from David Raya.

Huddersfield Town: Murphy, Smith, Hudson, Lynch, Scannell, Butterfield, Whitehead, Hogg, Davidson, Wells, Miller (Bunn 72). Unused substitutes: Cranie, Wallace, Hiwula, Dempsey, Hammill, Allinson.
