Huddersfield 2 Brentford 1: It proves such a perfect day for coach David Wagner

DAVID WAGNER was left to hail Huddersfield Town's 'perfect start' to the new campaign as they saw off Brentford 2-1, just 91 days after losing 5-1 at home to the same opponents on the final day of last season.

Substitute Kasey Palmer saw his name in lights after firing home Town’s winner moments after entering the fray, but head coach Wagner was eager to share around the plaudits on an afternoon when six players made their full debuts and two others made their bows from the bench.

Wagner said: “It was not only a perfect start for Kasey, but for all of us.

“We spoke a lot about our togetherness and identity. But we said before that it was only words and that we had to give them life.

“Everybody worked for each other and we showed fighting spirit. And there were good footballing moments as well and we created some good opportunities and we defended very strongly with concentration.”

Wagner said that there was no cause for overdue alarm after the 65th-minute substitution of striker Elias Kachunga with a slight hamstring issue.

Wagner, who said that Nakhi Wells could join the squad for tomorrow’s EFL Cup tie at Shrewsbury, said of Kachunga: “He got an impact after 10 minutes on the sideline and felt tightness after 65 minutes.

“From what I hear, it is not something serious and hopefully he is ready for Tuesday.

“He (Kachunga) never gives up and is uncomfortable to play against and, as a striker, he can score.

“He has something that, hopefully, suits English football and supporters will like.”
