Huddersfield 2 Millwall 1: Powell relieved at Terriers win

HUDDERSFIELD Town wasted no time in getting new signing Grant Holt involved at the John Smith’s Stadium but it was the pair who started up front who gave them their first home victory of the campaign.

The Wigan Athletic striker was given a place on the bench after signing on loan until November 8 to cover for the injured James Vaughan.

In the meantime, Harry Bunn was given a front role alongside Bermuda international Nahki Wells against Millwall, the pair combining for Town’s goals.

Town took the lead with their first shot of the game in the 28th minute when Joel Lynch launched the ball forward and, after it had come off his shoulder, Bunn laid it off for Wells to sweep into the net from near the edge of the area.

Millwall quickly replied and Ed Upson, who had earlier curled the ball against the bar, struck a 14-yard half-volley into the roof of the net as the Town defence stood motionless.

Town regained the lead when Nicky Bailey tripped Bunn after being turned by the striker and Wells despatched a 57th-minute penalty.

Injury to Lee Peltier led to Holt’s 64th-minute introduction and he certainly shook up the Lions defence with his physical presence.

Town had made one change from the side humbled at Leeds, Tommy Smith replacing Sean Scannell, an unsuccessful transfer deadline-day target of visitors Millwall. Scannell showed what they had missed when he taunted them out wide in a late cameo role.

Chris Powell admitted he was relieved to secure his first win as Huddersfield boss.

“That’s a relief,” Powell said. “It’s been a while. The win was a long time coming, not really for me, but for the club and the fans.

“It was well-earned in the end but when you’re a manager and come to a new club you want a positive result as soon as possible.”
