In front of a record crowd for football at Town’s home since 1994, goalkeepers Joel Coleman and Claudio Bravo pulled off vital saves to ensure the two teams will meet again a week on Tuesday at the Etihad Stadium.

Huddersfield were full value for their draw, David Wagner’s side refusing to let City settle with Dean Whitehead and Philip Billing superb as the defensive midfield duo.

The Championship side also carved out a couple of defence chances and left the field to a deserved standing ovation.

City went the closest to breaking the deadlock early on as Nolito brought a smart save from Joel Coleman before Mark Hudson kept out the rebound from Jesus Navas on the line.

Nolito also fired narrowly wide on the half hour and Fabian Delph had fired straight at Coleman when well placed.

Coleman also had to be alert just before the break to deny Sergio Aguero from close range.

Town, though, were far from bystanders in the game and had the ball in the net on 25 minutes through Philip Billing only for Collin Quaner to be adjudged offside.

Jack Payne also curled a free-kick that Claudio Bravo tipped over at full stretch, while Rajiv van La Parra was also denied by the Blues goalkeeper on 37 minutes.

Aguero brought a save from Coleman just 26 seconds after the restart but, in reality, the second half was a much tighter affair.

Navad did get to the byline in the 71st minute and drill a cross that no-one in a City shirt could capitalise on before Kevin De Bruyne was penalised for a foul on Coleman.

Izzy Brown had a late opportunity to released Nahki Wells but his pass was cut out to ensure honours ended even.
