Carlos Corberan's side went into the game having won three of their last four fixtures and returning 10 points from the last 12 available.

However, Alan Browne scored twice for Preston in as many second-half minutes to cancel out Fraizer Campbell's eighth-minute opener in an, at times, frantic encounter.

It is the first time Preston have won at the John Smith's Stadium, with their last win in Huddersfield coming in 1992 at Leeds Road.

The Terriers finished the game with 10 men after Naby Sarr was shown a straight red card for a professional foul with 12 minutes to play.

Corberan made two changes from the side that beat Derby County 1-0 on Tuesday night, drafting Christopher Schindler and Lewis O'Brien into the starting line-up in place of Carel Eiting and Josh Koroma.

O'Brien played a part in the opener when he slipped a pass through to Campbell who slid in to beat the chasing Andrew Hughes to the ball and slide it under the on-rushing Declan Rudd in the North End goal.

Preston started to enjoy more possession following the goal but only came close when Brad Potts fired an effort wide of the post from outside the area.

This was the second time these sides had met behind closed doors, after they drew 0-0 at the John Smith's Stadium during the final part of last season.

Town sat above Preston in the table prior to kick-off but the visitors were made slight favourites in the betting market after an unbeaten start on the road.

Alex Neil's side arrived in West Yorkshire with seven points from nine away from home, including a 4-2 victory at last season's play-off finalists Brentford.

They should have levelled through Scott Sinclair just after the half-hour mark when the former Celtic man got the better of Richard Stearman in the air only to slice his shot wide as the ball fell to him inside the penalty area.

Sarr then made a vital intervention as Emil Riis Jakobsen forced his way past Jonathan Hogg and into the area only to see his fierce effort diverted behind by Sarr.

At the other end, the Terriers almost doubled their lead through Pipa, who curled a shot towards the far corner from the edge of the box but Rudd was equal to it.

Preston were lucky to get to half time with 11 men when Potts lunged in late on Campbell. Huddersfield's players and bench were furious but after a brief coming together the Preston midfielder received a yellow card from referee Joshua Smith.

Within two second-half minutes Preston had turned the game on its head.

First, Browne equalised after picking up a loose ball in the area and curled an effort into the far corner in the 51st minute.

Preston had the momentum and took the lead two minutes later as Ben Hamer and Sarr collided while attempting to clear a cross, leaving Browne to lob the ball into the empty net for his and the visitors' second.

Corberan was spurred into a double change, bringing Adama Diakhaby and Carl Eiting on, in place of Schindler and O'Brien.

Preston dropped deeper following Browne's quickfire brace and were happy to hit the Terriers on the break.

They got in behind twice when Potts and Riis Jakobsen bore down on goal only for Richard Stearman and Sarr to get back to make the necessary last-ditch challenges and keep the hosts in the game.

Huddersfield had started to build pressure but were given a real mountain to climb in the final 12 minutes when Sarr was sent off for hauling down Riis Jakobsen, the referee deeming the foul to be denying a clear goal-scoring opportunity.

Pipa struck the outside of the post in injury time as the Terriers came close while Riis Jakobsen crashed an effort off the underside of the crossbar in the final seconds as Preston saw the game out.
