Huddersfield Town 1 Scunthorpe United 0: Novak snatches late Terriers winner

Simon Grayson’s Huddersfield Town needed a late winner to beat Scunthorpe United in League One today and clinch their play-off spot.

Striker Lee Novak replaced winger Danny Ward as Town went for a win which would guarantee their place in the League One play-offs.

Town Academy product David Mirfin took his place in the heart of the Iron defence.

Ian Bennett produced a great one-handed save to deny Robbie Gibbons before Gary Roberts missed a chance for Town, firing at goalkeeper Sam Slocombe.

Scunthorpe went close when Bobby Grant struck a free-kick against the post, the ball rebounding to safety.

Diego Arismendi was booked for a late challenge as both sides struggled to break through before the interval.

Jordan Rhodes spooned over a half-chance on the hour mark in what was proving a tepid encounter.

Jimmy Ryan struck the outside of the post as the visitors threatened to pinch a win.

Grant should have scored when Bennett parried a shot into his path but the striker could only hit the bar and the ball flew dead.

Town finally broke through in the 89th minute when Novak burst onto a pass from Roberts and fired home.
