Huddersfield Town 2 Peterborough 2: Robins happy to climb out of drop zone

Darren Ferguson had some harsh words for his players at half-time as Peterborough twice came from behind earn a 2-2 draw at fellow npower Championship strugglers Huddersfield.

Ferguson’s side were 1-0 down at the break and the Posh manager did not go easy on his players, sending them out five minutes early for the restart.

After his team extended their unbeaten run to eight matches, Ferguson said: “We let our standards slip today and the players know what I think.

“We came here to win the game but we played with a lack of intelligence at times and I am disappointed we didn’t get the three points.”

Posh remain in the bottom three despite their unbeaten run and Ferguson continued: “I don’t care where we are in the table.

“If we just overtake one or two in the last game to stay up I will be happy.

“Normally if you have 47 points with five games left you would be home and hosed.

“This season is different. I’ve no idea how many points we’ll need for safety and anyone who tries to predict it is mad.”

Ferguson is ready for the relegation battle to go to the wire and added: “This will go all the way to the last game, I’m convinced of that.

“We have beaten Cardiff twice and taken four points off Hull and we have been very consistent of late. We just have to keep going.”

Huddersfield went ahead four minutes before the break when goalkeeper Robert Olejnik could only parry Oliver Norwood’s curling strike and Neil Danns reacted first to hook in the rebound.

After Ferguson’s half-time blast Posh were level in the 50th minute when Nathaniel Mendez-Laing went on a run and crossed for Lee Tomlin to slot home.

The home side were back in front in the 69th minute when 20-year-old centre-back Murray Wallace headed home Norwood’s cross for his first goal for the club.

Town skipper Peter Clarke, who brilliantly cleared off the line from Mendez-Laing in the first half, cleared another goalbound effort from sub Tyrone Barnett with four minutes remaining.

However, from the resulting Tomlin corner Dwight Gayle stooped to head past Alex Smithies for his 12th goal of the campaign and earn the visitors a point.

Huddersfield boss Mark Robins was pleased his side moved out of the bottom three and said: “It’s a point gained and the positive is that we move up the table.

“We are devastated not to win the game but we fell into the bottom three and we’ve only been there a week.

“There are going to be many more twists and turns before the end of the season.”

Robins said: “In all fairness a draw was probably the right result.

“This was a tough, tough game and Peterborough have been in good form.”

Robins said his players worked hard and added: “I am not going to be too critical of them at this stage but we have to start seeing games out.

“What happens this season is still in our hands. We have Wolves and Blackburn up next and it’s what we do that matters. We don’t have to rely on other results.”
